Several years ago, there was such a tradedy in the United States: A Japanese student mistakingly ran into an American's backyard. The American ordered the student to freeze. The latter could not understand the word "freeze" and did not freeze. As a result, he was gunned down by the American guy.
For most Chinese English speakers, they have no problem in understanding "Stay where you are" or "Don't move". But that's not enough. For the same thing, English speakers have a lot of different ways to express.
In passing, I remind that if you are a driver and you are stopped by the cops, DO NOT get out of your car. Stay withing your car, and pull down your window, and wait for the police officer coming over. If you walk out of the car and the officer thinks you intend to threaten him or her, you could get shot. No kidding. In Chinese, people can bargain with the police officers. But we cannot do that outside of China.
