English! English!

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I got a phone call from a customer inquiring some products information. He asked how can he order the product since he was in another city. I asked him, "Where are you located?" I realized I was wrong immdiately after I finished my sentence, because the customer was getting very annoyed on the other side of the phone line. He raised his voice, " I am a PERSON, I am in Kentucky."

I felt so sorry, I apologized to him for not speaking correctly.

I still remember when I was working in another company one year ago, there was another customer called to order some products. I asked him his address. He told me he lived in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I asked him to spell Gettysburg for me. He paused for a while, spelled for me, then asked me to cancel the order. When asked why, he said, " forget it! You don't even know how to spell Gettysburg, How can I trust to do business with you guys?" He then hang up on me.

That upseted me for a long time. Soon after I found out why the customer thought I should know how to spell Gettysburg. Everybody has been to school would know Civil War, and would know Gettysburg War and the Gettsburg Address by Abraham Lincoln.

My friend told me wherenever she goes, if she hears some people not speaking very good English, she always understands them. I don't blame those customers not being thoughtful, but I always dream of speaking English with felicity of expression.

    • "Where are you located?" wrong? my esl teacher told me that's good english!
    • Thanks for sharing, Imagining a Canadian doing the same in China, I think you are great.
    • Don't be discouraged. 1. where are you located? :-)
    • It's not your fault, but theirs. If he cares about any burger more than business, forget it!
      • neither english nor culture, simply discrimination, white trash.
Should be you a Japanese, and your product was quite in demand, it would be a completely different story. Believe me.
